As an avid traveler, I always seek out historical landmarks, the serene beauty of nature, and the rich tapestry of diverse cultures. One of my most memorable travel experiences occurred on June 28, 2016, at Atatürk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey.
Just three hours before the tragic shootings and suicide bombings that claimed the lives of 45 people and injured over 230 others, I had departed from the very same airport.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of cherishing every moment and every destination. Life is short, so let's embrace the joy of traveling and exploring the wonders our world has to offer!
Driven by my fascination with art, history, and diverse cultures, I have had the privilege of exploring numerous off-the-beaten-path destinations worldwide.
With over 70 countries and 200 cities under my belt, I have honed the skill of traveling light, relying on only a 40-liter backpack and a point-and-shoot camera.

Traveling is far more than checking destinations off a list; it’s about embracing the journey itself and the surprises it brings.
Along the way, those unexpected encounters and moments of discovery often lead to personal growth and lasting memories.

1. Around the World
I typically schedule international travel during summer vacation or winter break, when I can take longer trips without disrupting teaching responsibilities.
Those breaks let me plan more ambitious itineraries, book better flights, and immerse myself in local culture, visiting museums, sampling regional cuisine, and exploring neighborhoods at a relaxed pace.
For spring break, I reserve a week for backpacking, usually through South America or Eastern Europe, favoring flexible, on‑the‑ground travel that combines scenic routes, local markets, and spontaneous side trips.
2. America the Beautiful
When I attend conferences and conventions across the United States, I make a point of exploring the host city whenever my schedule allows.
I often arrive a few days early so I can experience the local culture, architecture, and neighborhoods at a relaxed pace.
Renting a car for a day trip has become one of my favorite ways to discover nearby towns, scenic routes, and hidden gems that I would otherwise miss.
