Departing from Mostar, I embarked on a local train journey to reach Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Often referred to as the "Jerusalem of Europe," Sarajevo stands as a unique testament to religious diversity. It is the sole major European city where a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church, and synagogue coexist within the same neighborhood, showcasing the city's rich tapestry of faiths and cultures. Sarajevo's history is marked by a period of harrowing hardship, enduring years of siege, characterized by relentless shelling and civilian casualties. This challenging period in the city's history serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of the people of Sarajevo. |
